The 8th Annual Battle of the Beat Makers competition and Producer Retreat have prepared to open the floodgates for producers of all ages! Who will compete to be the crowned “Grand Champion” in 2012? As Canada’s pre-eminent producer event and Retreat, producers can look forward to an expansion of talent to entertain, enlighten and enrich. This year will feature another amazing weekend filled with information sharing, workshops, conferences, panels, networking engagements, product demonstrations, beat critiques, after parties and of course, the Main Event, “The Battle”.

As the only producer related event in Canada responsible for launching the careers of multi-platinum selling and Grammy-award winning producers, BBM is pleased to offer this unique opportunity to another batch of producers on the rise.

“The vision has always been to serve as a launching pad for Canadian producers to catapult their careers on the global stage.  We are largely responsible for changing the status of producers in Canada, from being a hidden and largely slept on (Hip Hop) element to one where producers are now some of the most celebrated figures in urban music,” says Clifton Reddick, BBM Founder.

Producers can register online at or in-person at various retail outlets listed on our website.

The prize packs will consist of cash and prizes valued at over $10,000. Battle of the Beat Makers (BBM) is Canada’s Official Producer Competition, which focuses on showcasing the talents of the hottest up-and-coming Canadian producers.

The buzz about Rick Ross’ new mixtape, Rich Forever has been building all week and almost shut down Twitter this afternoon.  Maybe a slight exaggeration, but not by much. For what’s supposed to be a mixtape, with collabos from Nas, Diddy, Pharrell,  John Legend, and of course MMG fam Wale, Meek Mill, & Stalley it definitely has an album quality about it.  Maybe it’s just too heavy to release commercially, but it gives fans something to hold onto until the BAWSE finally releases his next album, God Forgives, I Don’t.

There’s more than just one or two stand out tracks – my fave so far being the title track with John Legend – and I LOVE that Toronto producer Arthur McArthur gets some well-deserved shine on  Mine Games Ft. Kelly Rowland.

I definitely plan to bump this over the weekend  – ENJOY!!

This will undoubtedly be one of the hot ticket items for this Fall! Producer extraordinaire, 9th Wonder and artist Stalley have been added to an already impressive list of  judges. If you’re an on-the-rise producer and want to make your mark, you still have time to register for this competition — deadline is August 15th. Not sure if you’re ready to compete? Some of the other events look like they’ll make pretty good networking opportunities.  See the details below!

Grammy award winning and nominated producers, T-Minus, Boi-1da, 9th Wonder and Maybach Music Group Recording Artist Stalley will be joining aspiring producers in Toronto, Canada for the nations official producer competition and retreat. BBM Producer Retreat is a three-day, ten-event series.

Grammy nominated and platinum-selling producer, T-Minus is taking time to show his love for the event that gave him his initial push as a producer. T-Minus was crowned champion at the 2005 installment of the competition. “It’s an honour to come back and be a part of what was a big influence on my career, says T-Minus. “It was a pivotal moment in my life; it really showed that I had the talent to make it in the industry.” Since his win at BBM, T-Minus has gone on to earn a Grammy nomination for his production work on Ludacris’ “How Low”, and has produced chart toppers like T.I.’s “Poppin’ Bottles”, Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” featuring Drake and current smash hit by DJ Khaled “I’m On One” featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil’ Wayne.

Grammy award winning and platinum-selling producer Boi-1da, has competed in the event winning three times in previous years and took part as a judge in 2008 and 2010. He returns this year looking for the next top producer to win the 2011 crown. “I’m looking for creativity, transitions in the beats, and honestly just hard hitting beats” says Boi-1da. “Their beats have to move the crowd!” Boi-1da has garnered much awards and acclaim with chart topping hits and album credits such as Eminem’s album “Recovery”, Drake’s “Thank Me Now”, DJ Khaled’s “We The Best Forever” to name a few. Collectively selling platinum six-seven times over.

Grammy award winning producer 9th Wonder makes his first appearance to the competition this year. Very familiar with the grind producers have to endure to make it in the industry. 9th was tapped to produce on Jay-Z’s “Black Album”, three songs for the R&B Super group Destiny’s Child on the album “Destiny Fulfilled”, Mary J. Blige for “The Breakthrough”, Erykah Badu’s “Honey” and Ludacris’s “Do The Right Thang”, and will also be working with Drake on his sophomore album. 9th Wonder signs on as a special guest judge, panelist and keynote speaker at the Pro Audio Conference. The excitement doesn’t stop there! 9th Wonder will be screening the Canadian premiere of “The Wonder Year”, a documentary directed by Kenneth Price, which chronicles a year in the life of CEO, NAACP ambassador, Duke University professor, husband, father, son and Grammy award winning producer 9th Wonder.

Rounding out the list of judges is Maybach Music Group recording artist Stalley. “Producers and artists like the announced judges motivate aspiring producers to strive for success. Those same aspiring producers motivate me to continue putting my heart and soul into keeping BBM going.” Says Clifton Reddick, BBM/Sound Supremacy Entertainment Founder. “Turning on the radio and hearing Boi-1da & T-Minus or turning on the TV and watching music videos even awards shows featuring/acknowledging them is also something that makes me know the show must go on.”

Full details on each event will be made available via . This is the ultimate destination for any producer in Canada serious about showcasing their talent, networking and taking the next step in their musical career.

I can’t front – I took an instant liking to Slakah da Beatchild’s music. He’s worked with some of my favorite Canadian artists (including D.O, Melanie Durrant, Sauks), and his beats remind me of the easy going, ‘for the love’ nature of hip hop’s so-called Golden Era.  His label, BBE is releasing a special edition of Slakah’s album, Something Forever, featuring 4 bonus tracks. Below, he breaks down the feel/inspiration for the tracks on this special edition.  If you missed it the first time around, it’s worth your while to check it out right now!

This is the Special Edition version of Slakah The Beatchild’s “Something Forever” that was released recently released as CD on BBE. It features four hot bonus tracks.

In Slakah’s own words “Something Forever” is “the theme that is forever at the forefront of my mind when I create music. We can easily identify music that has that indescribable timeless vibe, music that regardless of the time period in which it was created sounds refreshing and relevant when played.”

“When the Night Stood Still” : A warm summer night can evoke a variety of conflicting yet unifying emotions, Slakah’s love for the starry sky above inspired this piece which takes you on a relaxing journey through the night as it stands still.

Something Forever”: This piece is based around an entrancing chord progression that could go on and on, hence the title.

“Living for the Rush”: We all have our own ways of escaping and feeling a rush, what ever ones ! rush is this, piece represents the sound track to the feeling of being in that moment.

“The Things I Do (For Her)”: When you’re passionate about someone or in this case something, that love may drive you to do things you would never imagine…

“Down”: A cool groove to make your body rock and forget about the stress of the work week.

“B-Boy Beef V2”: Version 2 to the original version found on critically acclaimed Soul Movement vol.1.

“Illusions”: What your heart feels could often conflict with what your mind feels.

“This Beautiful Feeling”: This song featuring Ebrahim is a reminder for us all to never take “Time” for granted. We can find joy in even bad moments.

“The Cure”: We’ve all had that one person in our life who like a prescribed drug made everything better in our life. But like any drug, you can get addicted to what makes you feel good.

“D.A.N.C.E.”: Timeless vibes,! memories in the making in the company of great friends or the! soul synchronization of a stranger, the positive energy exchanged between people when celebrating life, is at the root of what inspired this song.

“War Within”: Collaboration with Swedish soul artist Magnus Tingsek & Canadian artist Ebrahim. War Within was written and recorded while the two were in Toronto for Slakah the Beatchild’s Vibe Love Smile Tour. This song relates to the inner wars one goes through when battling addiction.

The International buzz single from two of Toronto’s finest Hip Hop artists!
(TORONTO) — Legendary Toronto producer and DJ, SCAM (Dear Hip Hop, About to Change, Power Move show), has always elevated his sound and style with every new project he’s been a part of. From the gritty, street inspired tales of Concrete Mob to the eclectic, true school chops of Thrust, SCAM has laid an incredibly diverse foundation for aspiring producers in the Canadian Hip Hop scene. With his brand new partnership, SCAM has tapped crowd favourite and internationally respected MC THEO3 (How I Flow Part 2, It’s Theo3) who brings his own unique flow and style into the mix. THEO3, fresh off the success of How I Flow part 2 on Much Music and Flow 93.5fm coupled with the humbling accolades from Sirius and WNYU mainstay DJ Eclipse, has managed to tip toe the line between head nodding Hip Hop and wider appeal. The two couldn’t h ave met at a better time and the sound scapes emanating from the Time Bandits Music laboratories are set to smash the boundaries and push the limits beyond the average 16 bar verse and 3 minute song.
With the brand new buzz single LOVE (Close Enough), THEO3 and SCAM play a game of back and forth as the rapid fire lyrics blend over an ever-changing composition taking the listener on an unforgettable ride of intense emotions. From one night stands to wedding bands and everything in between, THEO3 delves into the subject of LOVE and its frustrating, rewarding, time-consuming and character building twists and turns. In the end, if you can’t be happy with yourself then how can you really seek to please someone else, it’s a message that resonates with anyone who’s ever navigated the rocky landscape of relationships. This song is sure to connect with audiences everywhere and inspire mass sing a longs to the infectiously catchy chorus.

The Rap Advisory Committee includes seasoned label representative Jay Devonish (eOne Entertainment), David “Click Cox” (Stylus DJ Awards), Greg Baptiste (MuchMusic/CTV), Jody Laraya (Universal Music Canada), Jesse Plunkett (, Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley (CKLN 88.1FM), Jay Swing (Beat 94.5FM), Kyle Kraft (Battle Axe), Dice B (CINQ 102.3FM), Don Smooth (K103FM), Rez Digital (Flow 93.5FM) and Darryl Rodway (Urbnet). Collectively, the committee is making strides in developing outreach to rap artists across the country, both English and Francophone, to increase the number of submissions.
