The Honey Jam Artist Showcase  —  National Talent Search is on!

This one is near and dear to me! I’ve been involved with Honey Jam since it launched in 1995 and it remains the longest running all-female talent showcase in the country.  Since it began, notable artists such as Jully Black, Nelly Furtado, Melanie Durrant, Eternia, Reema Major, Kellylee Evans and so many more have been in the Honey Jam spotlight.  This is an excellent opportunity for both established and emerging female artists.  The show is in Toronto, but Honey Jam proudly hosts ladies from Vancouver, Montreal, Scotia and more! If you know a female artist who is amazingly talented and would be ideal for this show, read below and peep the website – www.HoneyJam.com.  The auditions are in June and the showcase takes place in August… more details to come!

Toronto – The Honey Jam artist showcase, celebrates its Sweet 16 anniversary at the Mod Club Theatre (722 College Street) on Thursday, August 11, 2011.  Hosted by MuchMusic’s Sarah Taylor, the 2011 edition promises to deliver one of the best showcases in the history of the event – a night of exciting live entertainment with a diverse group of artists.

As Honey Jam turns 16 so does it’s breakout star from the 2010 showcase, rapper Reema Major who is causing a lot of buzz in the industry with her I am Legend Mixtape.

Ebonnie Rowe, Honey Jam Founder, Producer and President of PhemPhat Entertainment Group, says “We’re so proud of Reema!  I’m confident that we’ll be hearing similar success stories from several of the artists performing this year.  They are at the right age, the talent is undeniable, many are also songwriters and play instruments as well.  But I don’t want to give away all the details of what you can expect  – you have to come out to the show!!”

The lineup of 18 artists from Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and London includes 3 artists from the acclaimed Remix Project and child piano prodigy Catherine He, at age 7 the youngest artist ever to take to the Honey Jam stage.  Go to www.honeyjam.com and click on “2011 artists” to see more info on who made the cut.

DJs for the night include MelBoogie and Tasha Rozez.

The show is not a competition but there are prizes/opportunities being offered.  All of the artists will have one of their tracks featured on a promotional compilation CD courtesy of Universal Music Canada which will be handed out at the showcase, Universal will also give each artist consultation time with their Director of A&R.  The girls will receive product from Benefit Cosmetics, Converse is also giving each artist a backpack and certificate for a pair of shoes, and they all received 1 hour of one-on-one vocal/performance coaching time with Elaine Overholt sponsored by Slaight Music.  One lucky artist whose name is pulled randomly will receive Honey Jam Hookup Prize Pack which includes sound equipment from Yamaha, a photo shoot with Nathaniel Anderson, legal consultation with Taylor Mitsopolous Klein Oballa, $1,000 cash from EMI Music Canada and a fitness package from Think Fitness.

I always feel a huge amount of pride whenever someone from my city represents on a big scale, but when they’re from Scarborough, well, they may as well be a relative – that’s just how amped I get!! In the case of Choclair – he’s a bit of both.

Running down the accolades, he’s a multi-Juno Award winner, a 5-time MMVA  winner and his debut album, Ice Cold, went gold in Canada in 30 days – a huge feat in a country where hockey and rock & roll (even country music) reign supreme from coast to coast.  Though I always thought the album was dope, it was the EP, What It Takes, that made me a fan for life, and as far as I’m concerned, solidified his spot in Canadian hip hop history.   With tracks like What It Takes (featuring then relatively unknown songstress, Jully Black),  Just A Second (with the illustrious Tara Chase), along with a number of remixes of each, no one can argue that the EP is full of classic material, indicative of  T-Dot hip hop in the late 90s.

Fast forward to 2010, and Chox is prepping for his new album.  Peep the new track from his upcoming LP, MADE (Move Mountains)…. listen and enjoy!!

Phemphat Productions is an organization I’ve been involved with since it launched in 1995.  Whether you’re an up and coming artist, or you want to get some real behind-the-scenes experience of running a live show, I’d definitely recommend auditioning or volunteering for Honey Jam. Widely respected ladies from across the country, including the likes of Jully Black, Motion, Eternia, Tara Chase, Nelly Furtado, Kellylee Evans and many, many more all performed on the HJ stage early in their career.
