Toronto, ON (October 10, 2014) – The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced that the JUNO Awards is now accepting submissions in the category of Rap Recording of the Year. The 2015 festivities will be hosted in Hamilton, Ontario, with JUNO Week running from March 9th to March 15th.  The 44th Annual JUNO Awards will be broadcast on CTV from Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre, on Sunday March 15th, 2015.

In an effort to streamline the screening process, and make it even easier for artists across Canada to submit for consideration, CARAS will only be accepting online submissions.  For the first time, artists will be able to upload their music via the online submission process.

The Rap Advisory Committee includes Co-Chairs, Jay Devonish (eOne Entertainment), and Kyle Kraft (Battle Axe/ Krafty Entertainment).  Rounding out the rest of the Committee is David “Click” Cox (CLK Creative Works), Alan Greyeyes (Manitoba Music), Darryl Rodway (Urbnet), Dice B (CINQ 102.3FM), Don Smooth (K103FM), Greg Baptiste (Bell Media), Jay Swing (Donnelly Group/NationOfMillions.ca), Jesse Plunkett (HipHopCanada.com), Jody Laraya (Independent Promotions), Marlon Wilson, (Music for Mavericks/Politic Live), Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley (DJ/Publicist), and RS Smooth (DJ/Radio Host).

Collectively, the Rap Advisory Committee continues to make strides in developing outreach to rap artists across the country, both English and Francophone, to increase the number of submissions in this category. As a result of these concentrated efforts, the number of submissions received by CARAS in the category of Rap Recording of the Year has been steadily rising since the category was established in 1990.  By partnering with radio shows, online magazines and DJs across the country, the committee hopes to continue to raise awareness throughout the community about the submissions and judging process, specifically for rap artists.

The JUNO Awards have been proven to be an excellent networking vehicle, not only for artists who win, but also for nominees and/or participants in various JUNO Awards events.

2014 Rap nominee, SonReal, had this to say about his JUNO nomination: “Being nominated for a JUNO Award has had a great impact on my career. People value and appreciate the credential of being nominated for an award of that level. It is an amazing award show to experience and I think anyone who is serious about their craft should give it a shot and apply.”  2013 nominee, JD Era, echoes that sentiment by stating: “Being JUNO nominated was amazing. It allowed me to be recognized nationally for my work and has opened doors for me in places I couldn’t imagine.”

Other previous nominees include Classified, Choclair, Concise, D-Sisive, DL Incognito, Drake, Dubmatique, Eternia, k-os, Kardinal Offishall, Rich Kidd, Sans Pression, Shad, and Swollen Members.

Submissions can be made online at http://junosubmissions.ca .  Nominees will be announced on January 27th, 2015 at the JUNO Nominee press conference.

Early Bird Submission Deadline Date is 5:00 p.m. EST on October 24th, 2014.

The Final Submission Deadline is 5:00 p.m. EST on November 13th, 2014.

How it works:

330 Judges – Each year, judges are recruited for each of the 33 adjudicated categories to judge the material that is submitted. These individuals are responsible for listening to each of the submissions and voting for the best product in the genre. The judges change each year and are spread out in different facets of the music industry and different regions throughout Canada.
50 Nominating & Voting Committee Members – The Nominating & Voting Committee is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the JUNO Awards. It is their responsibility to monitor any changes within the industry as it relates to the awards. The committee brings any necessary changes to the attention of the Board of Directors.
190+ Music Advisory Committee Members – Each category has an associated advisory committee that is responsible for ensuring that each of the submissions in their specific genre meets the required qualifications for the JUNO Awards.

There’s nothing better than catching up on some music, and this is one I definitely need to share.  It’s no secret that JD Era is one of my favourite MCs and I’m amped that the rest of the world is starting to recognize that too! He was nominated for a JUNO this year, and although he didn’t take home the hardware, I think the fresh suit he wore to the awards received more press than the actual winner – proof that there’s nothing like a sharp dressed man!

Peep this freestyle and jump on the ERA train now:

I LOVE JD Era’s hustle! Lyrics and beats galore, AND he knows how to rock a suit! Peep the new video featuring the legendary Raekwon. It’s no wonder that he’s Your Favourite Rapper’s Favourite! Keep you eyes open for cameos from Ghostface, Action Bronson and more…. if you haven’t picked up that NO HANDOUTS mixtape – you need to get on that!! Check it out at DatPiff.com.

It’s been a while since I posted something, but this one was worth the wait.  JD Era AND Shi Wisdom on the same track?! Whoa…..

Last time we heard from JD Era, he was at “The Top of the Game.” Continuing to get the people ready for his highly anticipated No Handouts project, Era has let us know that he’s sitting on top and taking up a spot on “Mount Olympus.”

Trumpets blaring matched with sharp drum hits create a canvas of music that Era uses to weave an anthem. Just hearing the music alone, one can imagine the gates of Olympus opening, calling for those who deserve to be there. On top of the great music, Shi Wisdom lends her angelic voice for the hook to accentuate the beat and breaks.

Era hits the ground running on this new leak , coming with the same ferocity and fire that has established him as one of the best in the business. Once again JD Era comes correct right of the jump with lines like “the clash of the titans, sharp swords into the jaws of those biting, we want the king this calls for more fighting, more writing, more lightning.”

Having verses like “powerful shit Zeus couldn’t produce, the rap gods coming for a truce, blessed in the booth, sipping over proof till the juice starts flowing from the top of the roof” shows Era’s creativity and ability to use different types of flows that most emcees can’t.
JD Era continues to create buzz for No Handouts, having just finished up the Canadian leg of the Unexpected Victory tour with Raekwon. Be on the lookout for Era and Chef touring throughout the United States as the tour continues until April 20th. More information about dates and locations can be found at www.nohandouts.net. Stay tuned for the official release of No Handouts coming very soon. With tracks like this one, it’s easy to see that JD Era has a gift from the Gods.
JD Era workin’ a tux and Raekwon the Chef payin tribute to Guyana Gold (braps to my GT Massive), is a nice way to start the day! Off the IceH20 label, peep the new video below!!
“They used to turn off the water and cut off the cable/ Now, I’m standing with the God, ’bout to bring M’s to the table…”
There are plenty of reasons for JD Era and The Chef to celebrate, so for their new visual, we get way more than “Just A Toast.” In a penthouse suite high above the streets of NYC, with a private stock of top-tier booze and more dime-pieces than we can count, Wu-Tang Clan’s leading man as of late cheers to his recent Unexpected Victory. And, while we’re all obviously jealous, you can’t deny the high rise digs don’t effectively compliment the lyrical lifestyle displayed on producer Mark Henry’s upper-class instrumental.

This one came out on New Year’s Day, and although Unexpected Victory turned out to be a little laid back, it’s still dope and I’ll always love Raekwon no matter what.  What I really love is that Toronto is ALLLLL over this! From H20 signee JD Era, to production by Pro Logic and MoSS, the mixtape is quality hip hop – as if you’d ever expect anything less.  Legends Busta Rhymes, Mobb Deep, Styles P and producer 9th Wonder also make appearances.  A surprise on the mixtape is a track called Facetime, introducing emerging crooner Altrina Renee. Overall, the Unexpected gives you a taste of what you can look forward to hearing from the label later this year.  It’s dope enough for me to overlook the fact that Raekwon looks suspiciously like Beanie Sigel on the cover artwork…

More music to bump to this weekend – ENJOY….

How do you make a dope song even crazier? Put JD ERA on it!!! It’s one of those tracks that make me wanna fully dismiss my ladylike side (yes, it does exist….sometimes) and throw a chair – arghhhhhh!!! Because sharing is caring….listen and enjoy!

Happy Friday!!

One of THE most promising MCs in the city right now, JD Era has been steadily building towards this point in his career.  Mad talented and lyrically fierce, you can only shake your head after listening to his flow because he makes it look so damn easy! A few months ago he made serious waves by getting signed to Raekwon‘s imprint label ICEH2O.  His track CHANGE from The Real Frequency’s compilation, The New North was officially released earlier this week and before you can even recover , Era hit you with another one!!

The newest release is Pay Day 2, an updated version of a track on Era’s last project, but is well worth taking in. Calling on some 70’s style pimp ish on the production, Snaz goes in hard on the beat while Era works his lyrical magic.  The joint features some inside-the-biz quotables from B.I.G and Pac before the legendary Raekwon grabs the mic and demolishes  it.  It’s tracks like this that get me even more amped for Era’s upcoming album, No Hand Outs.

It’s been a few weeks since Toronto’s own JD Era officially joined Raekwon’s ICEH20 record label.  I’m really excited to hear what JD Era, (an MC that I’ve been able to watch grow since he was in highschool!!) and a legend like Raekwon the Chef can cook up.  The two go INNNNN on the nasty beat from Nas, and it has me ready for the full meal.  I can’t wait to rinse it!! Peep the link below for this appetizer called Dirty Water….

Look out for Era’s summer release, No Handouts, which will be his first release on Raekwon’s Ice H20 imprint. It will be available for free download, later this month at nohandouts.net.
