Brand new video featuring some of my fav T-Dot MCs – official blurb is below.  Watch and enjoy!!

Celebrating over 25 years in the music industry, Maestro Fresh Wes is one of the most influential hip hop artists in Canada. With BORN IN TORONTO, the Godfather of Canadian Hip Hop releases the visuals for his collabo with the ‘Young Boss’, Rich Kidd about the city they both represent.  Directed by Andre Rehal and produced by Bruce Carson of Worked Films, the video features glimpses of some famous landmarks and events that make Toronto the amazing city that it is.  From the fireworks of the city’s annual Cavalcade of Lights, to the colourful spectrum of Caribana, to peeks at City Hall and The ACC, the home of The Toronto Raptors, Wes and Rich Kidd deliver this dedication to their city from East to West.  In addition to some of Toronto’s key landmarks, the video also features cameos by Kardinal Offishall, Shad K, and Kwajo Cinco (from Ghetto Concept).

With beats produced by Rich Kidd, “BORN IN TORONTO” features the two MCs trading bars on all things related to the city — from music and city history, to politics and social commentary – all with a touch of lyrical word play and style. In addition to being a much sought-after producer and MC, Rich Kidd recently received a 2015 JUNO Award nomination for Rap Recording of the Year as part of Natural Born Strangers, his group with fellow T-Dot artists Tona, and Adam Bomb, who is also featured on the hook for this single.  The visuals are the perfect match to tell the story of Toronto.

Wow – it’s been about 2 months since my last post, but that’s because I’ve been blessed enough to be crazy busy. In-store appearances, mad parties, and corporate events (shouts out to H&M Canada and all the recipients of the Golden Hanger Awards!), but this is the one that has me REALLY excited.  When Diamond D‘s “Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop” came out in 1992, I was a kilt-wearing Catholic high school girl with a serious addiction to all things hip hop.  The only thing that’s really changed is I can’t fit into that kilt now to save my life.

On Sunday February 15th, the legendary DIAMOND D will be hitting the stage to perform the classic album – in its entirety! I’m sure he’ll drop a few surprises here and there, and will squeeze in one or two of his newer joints, but I’m truly amped to be opening for this icon.  I’ll be hitting the stage alongside DJ Law, with an opening performance by King Reign.  My peoples Click will be holding it down with hosting duties. Not only is it going to be mad fun, but it’s also a fundraiser for Manifesto. Can’t Wait!

Legendary MC Melle Mel is Amongst Twelve Iconic Artists Enlisted for Milestone Celebration in Toronto

(TORONTO, Canada) –  AMNESIA, Toronto’s legendary Old School event, will celebrate its 15 Year Anniversary on Saturday December 13, 2014 at The Sound Academy (11 Polson Piers, Toronto). Since 1999, Amnesia has treated the city to monthly signature ‘Old School’ events showcasing forgotten music from old school & classic house to retro, rhythm & blues and golden era hip hop. Each year on its anniversary, some of music’s most memorable names take the stage as surprise guests.

For this milestone, the team has enlisted a stunning roster of legendary artists, including the Hip Hop pioneer, Melle Mel from Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five who, alongside The World Famous DJ Starting from Scratch, will lead “The Amnesia Hip Hop Ride”, a segment featuring some of classic hip hop’s most iconic. The remaining acts, including artists representing the R&B genre will remain a surprise until revealed on stage.

The surprise performance element of The Anniversary is what truly sets the evening apart. The first ever anniversary performance in 2002 featured Canadian hip hop legend Maestro Fresh-Wes who whipped the crowd of 1500 patrons into a frenzy.  Since then, Amnesia has hosted an impressive, internationally known list of acts including freestyle, dance and house acts Cece Peniston, Lisa Lisa, Crystal Waters, Ten City and The Jets, R&B icons Bell Biv Devoe (BBD), SWV, Karyn White and Dru Hill, and Hip Hop heavyweights such as MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, Rob Base and Naughty By Nature. Canadian Icons such as Kardinal Offishall, Saukrates, Dream Warriors and Michie Mee, and dance agencies Do Dat & Bag Of Trixx have been there every step of the way. Anticipation is high for the 15 year celebration, which expects to attract close to 3,000 patrons.

As part of the Amnesia 15 Year Anniversary festivities, for the first time ever, Amnesia will take place in New York, invading “the longest running Friday-Night Dance Party in NYC History, The Freedom Party® NYC, on Friday December 12th at Santos Party House.
The Amnesia Team consists of 3 individuals with a common love of music: Ian Andre Espinet, one of the city’s leading event producers and respected graphic designer, is responsible in whole or part for some of the city’s most unique and memorable nightclub events in years past. He is responsible for visually transforming concepts into tangible entities, and is the host of the event. DJ Starting from Scratch, is Canada’s foremost urban club and radio DJ. He can be heard daily on VIRGIN Radio 99.9FM nationally, and seen at concert and club engagements throughout the country and worldwide in his role as tour DJ for artists Usher and Carlos Santana and comedians Russell Peters and George Lopez. DJ Jason Chambers is one of the country’s greatest underground musical legends, and can be heard daily on Toronto’s G98.7FM.

Including the Legendary
Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five

The inaugural Amnesia event took place in September 1999 in response to the fact that the certain musical genres were neglected in nightclubs – almost as though DJs and patrons had AMNESIA.  Armed with musical knowledge, Amnesia began with a mandate to play Classic House and Old School, and today has grown to encompass New Jack Swing, Classic Slow Jams, and Retro including 70s and 80s television themes and classics.

Since it’s humble beginnings in Toronto’s quaint Granite Lounge, where it played host to 150 friends, Amnesia has produced countless themed events including roller skating all-nighters, Old school dress up nights, city boat cruises  – all often while collecting food for those in need. Each year since 2002, the Legendary Amnesia Anniversary has hosted “Old School” surprise guest performances by musical legends to crowds of over 2500. In 2006, this trailblazing trio signed to Universal Music Canada to produce “Amnesia: Thee Old School Album”, a compilation mixed CD, which was nationally distributed at retailers such as HMV and Music World.  The album which echoed the retro feeling the parties are known for, was a runaway success, taking retail by surprise.

Over 35 special guests, 200 events, and over 100,000 guests and 15 years later, Amnesia is still The Soundtrack to Our Lives.

Toronto, ON (October 10, 2014) – The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced that the JUNO Awards is now accepting submissions in the category of Rap Recording of the Year. The 2015 festivities will be hosted in Hamilton, Ontario, with JUNO Week running from March 9th to March 15th.  The 44th Annual JUNO Awards will be broadcast on CTV from Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre, on Sunday March 15th, 2015.

In an effort to streamline the screening process, and make it even easier for artists across Canada to submit for consideration, CARAS will only be accepting online submissions.  For the first time, artists will be able to upload their music via the online submission process.

The Rap Advisory Committee includes Co-Chairs, Jay Devonish (eOne Entertainment), and Kyle Kraft (Battle Axe/ Krafty Entertainment).  Rounding out the rest of the Committee is David “Click” Cox (CLK Creative Works), Alan Greyeyes (Manitoba Music), Darryl Rodway (Urbnet), Dice B (CINQ 102.3FM), Don Smooth (K103FM), Greg Baptiste (Bell Media), Jay Swing (Donnelly Group/, Jesse Plunkett (, Jody Laraya (Independent Promotions), Marlon Wilson, (Music for Mavericks/Politic Live), Melissa “DJ MelBoogie” Langley (DJ/Publicist), and RS Smooth (DJ/Radio Host).

Collectively, the Rap Advisory Committee continues to make strides in developing outreach to rap artists across the country, both English and Francophone, to increase the number of submissions in this category. As a result of these concentrated efforts, the number of submissions received by CARAS in the category of Rap Recording of the Year has been steadily rising since the category was established in 1990.  By partnering with radio shows, online magazines and DJs across the country, the committee hopes to continue to raise awareness throughout the community about the submissions and judging process, specifically for rap artists.

The JUNO Awards have been proven to be an excellent networking vehicle, not only for artists who win, but also for nominees and/or participants in various JUNO Awards events.

2014 Rap nominee, SonReal, had this to say about his JUNO nomination: “Being nominated for a JUNO Award has had a great impact on my career. People value and appreciate the credential of being nominated for an award of that level. It is an amazing award show to experience and I think anyone who is serious about their craft should give it a shot and apply.”  2013 nominee, JD Era, echoes that sentiment by stating: “Being JUNO nominated was amazing. It allowed me to be recognized nationally for my work and has opened doors for me in places I couldn’t imagine.”

Other previous nominees include Classified, Choclair, Concise, D-Sisive, DL Incognito, Drake, Dubmatique, Eternia, k-os, Kardinal Offishall, Rich Kidd, Sans Pression, Shad, and Swollen Members.

How it works:

330 Judges – Each year, judges are recruited for each of the 33 adjudicated categories to judge the material that is submitted. These individuals are responsible for listening to each of the submissions and voting for the best product in the genre. The judges change each year and are spread out in different facets of the music industry and different regions throughout Canada.
50 Nominating & Voting Committee Members – The Nominating & Voting Committee is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the JUNO Awards. It is their responsibility to monitor any changes within the industry as it relates to the awards. The committee brings any necessary changes to the attention of the Board of Directors.
190+ Music Advisory Committee Members – Each category has an associated advisory committee that is responsible for ensuring that each of the submissions in their specific genre meets the required qualifications for the JUNO Awards.

Peace y’all!

I don’t post all the events that I do, but this one is pretty special.  I interviewed Boi-1da years ago (pre-Drake madness) on DD Radio, as a returning judge of Urbanology Mag‘s monster Beat Battle competition. He was pretty quiet, but with a great personality and mad humble.  When I bumped into him a few years later (post-Grammy wins under his belt plus all the attention that comes with it), I was REALLY happy to see that he was pretty much the same guy – still humble and sweet!

That’s why I’m pretty amped to be dropping a guest DJ set at this event this coming weekend.  Come party with me and DJ Romeo (Don’t Forget The Name!), as we celebrate the birthday of Boi-1da and ALL Libras! The birthday boy will not only be hosting the party, but the word is that he’ll also be dropping a guest set on the decks – now, THIS I gotta see!!

And so should you! Join us on Saturday October 18th, as we celebrate the birthday of Boi-1da and all Libras at SARCOA (57 Discovery Road, Hamilton).  Bottle service is recommended.

This one is going to be quick but a must post – salute and much appreciation goes to Ms. Emily Mills, founder of the annual How She Hustles Brunch. Celebrating an amazing five years this past weekend, the brunch is an annual networking event for female entrepreneurs from all areas of business. Not only do you see familiar faces from radio and television, but fashion designers, hairstylists, caterers, brand specialists and more – most of whom have a side ‘hustle’ in addition to whatever full time work, school and family commitments they have. And quite honestly, sometimes the hustle is just life itself! I made it to the first one 5 years ago, when there were only about 50 women in attendance. This past weekend, I was shocked and amazed to see a room with over 230 women: all ages, all backgrounds, all awesome. There were so many people there, I sadly didn’t get to say hello to everyone as much as I would have liked. The online community has grown to about 2,000 dedicated members.

Although it was announced that this would be the fifth and final edition, I’m hoping we can somehow nudge Ms. Mills into continuing to produce this much-needed event. I don’t usually do special mixes, but for Emily, I just had to do a little something for the ladies to vibe to during brunch. No bells and whistles, just a mix done the true mix tape way – all in one take.  Peep the link below for the special all-ladies ‘How She Hustles’ Mix, created by yours truly:

TEAMThanks to all the listeners who made #24Hours24DJs a HUGE success this year! The level of engagement with the listeners, students at York University and the city itself was monstrous – so much so that #24Hours24DJs was trending on Twitter! Needless to say, when you have 24 DJs repping for 4 different teams, there’s going to be a HIGH level of trash talk, but it was all in good fun. The winning team was Team Soca Prince, so congrats are definitely in order, but the 2014 Coaches Award goes to DOC — ok, that’s not a REAL award, but he deserves it anyway!

Seriously, not only did this showcase the level of skill and talent the DJs have, but this was a phenomenal way for CHRY 105.5FM to kick off it’s annual fundraising drive! I can’t lie – I was on cloud 9 when I saw the full Mighty Monolith crew on stage at Revival last month. All 10 members at the same damn time? It was an historic moment!  Since making their mark in Canadian hip hop with some classic joints, some members of the crew have gone on to do things outside of the music industry, but like Dan-e-o and Wio-K, one member of the crew who always drops a tasty tidbit for the listeners is Grimace Love.

Grimace Love releases TELL DEM as the third official release off of his upcoming album entitled, Strength. This song features Jamaican-Canadian veteran emcee Wio-K and up and coming triple threat T Dot artist Degazity. TELL DEM is the perfect blend of hip hop and foundation roots reggae, creating a sound that is distinctly Toronto. All of the artists on the track are first generation Canadians displaying their strong Caribbean, West-Indian influences on the song. In addition the music video for TELL DEM was shot at the 2014 Caribana parade in Toronto and was directed by Andre Rehal and produced by Bruce Carson for Worked Films. TELL DEM is a powerful record and the song and video are packed with Caribbean content and visuals that truly represent the T Dot!

After you tell dem, follow dem:
