On Friday August 31st, 106 and York UrbanArts Youth Festival brings together the city’s top artists for an annual multi-disciplinary youth arts festival that happens in Toronto’s North-West communities. Now in its fifth year, this community event has grown and invites everyone to join in celebrating the talent of performers and visual artists from across the city.  Headliners for this year’s events include JD Era, (signed to the label of Raekwon, of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan), Juno-nominated Producer/MC Rich Kidd, one of Toronto’s most exciting new  vocalists, Shi Wisdom, lyrical assassin Jelly TooFly, and many more.

“The great thing about 106 and York is that it works as a community and professional development initiative by mentoring less experienced youth on all the positions necessary to make the festival happen. This way the festival is youth run –  and stays youth run.”, says event organizer Leandra LeGendre.  “The festival showcases established artists such as JD Era, Rich Kidd and Shi Wisdom and provide emerging artists with the opportunity of a paid performance by featuring them on the same stage. The fresh and positive grassroots energy from the crowd is something worth celebrating.”

With the support of festival partners UrbanArts, N.I.S.E. Clothing, High Class, and Manifesto, the organizers have developed a stellar showcase of  Toronto’s talent and continues to give artists a platform from which they can build their careers. In addition to performances, community merchandise/info tables allow local organizations and entrepreneurs to get involved by displaying information about their group, including Urbanology Magazine, Hip Hop Canada.com, Stolen from Africa, and others.
