Dwayne Morgan – If She Only Knew Her Beauty

February 1, 2012

On the heels of checking out When Sisters Speak (which was FANTASTIC!), I had to go back and re-write or remove a few sentences here and there before posting – this poem struck a few too many chords in me, but I definitely wanted to share! Shouts out to Dwayne Morgan!!

Growing up as a “girl-child” in a West Indian home means that you’re expected to develop a thick skin. Being called too dark/too light/too fat/too skinny plays with a girl’s feelings after a while, but every single girl friend I have who grew up with a West Indian family has similar stories of being told they’re too much of one thing, while not enough of another. Most of the time we laugh over them, but you can tell by looking at their eyes that it still stings, even if only a little bit.

That’s probably why I’m so protective of my daughter, and never miss the opportunity to let her know how gorgeous she is – simply because I never want her to question whether or not she’s beautiful.

Dope Video and shouts to Tika Simone!! If you want to experience some more of the goodness that Dwayne Morgan consistently delivers, peep the website www.DwayneMorgan.ca
