Got Beef? Drake Vs. Common Goes into Next Round

January 9, 2012

I’ve barely had a chance to wipe the sleep from my eyes, and there’s more BEEF on this Monday morning!! Drake vs. Common has officially gone into Round Two, with Comm delivering some serious shots to the head on a remix for Stay Schemin’ with Rick Ross, French Montana, and um, Drake….

Blow for blow, it kinda went down like this, where Drake had his say:

“I just ask that when you see me, you speak up ni–a that’s all
Don’t be ducking like you never wanted nothing.
It’s feeling like rap changed, it was a time it was rugged.
Back when if a ni–a reached it was for the weapon, nowadays ni–as reach just to sell they record.”

And of course, Common wasted no time in delivering his scathing response:

My Motto is, Chicago bitch
Everybody know you sweet – what the problem is?
Don’t play dumb I’m the one that acknowledged it
Son of a bitch, I imagine what your father is
She said how you make your opponent the rapper of the moment, the style he don’t own it
Acting all hard when he hardly like that
You gonna mess around and make me catch a body like that, owww….”

It’s been a while since we had a good old-fashioned beef in hip hop, that stayed strictly within the realm of lyrics so it will definitely be interesting to see how this one plays out. As much as I love Common, I really want to see Drake come out of his corner swingin’ on the next one… And it gives the world of hip hop something to talk about other than the newborn of Beyonce and Jay-Z (they had a baby, I’ve got 3 – so what?!?!)…..Anyway, I digress… Want to hear the full song? Take a listen below…

Wow. Wow. Wow…Common is too sick with it…”You aint wetting nobody, ni**a, you Canada Dry”

Drake needs to come out swinging for real.

  2. HOLY SHIT, Common just lost a whole gang of respect from me! If he had a reason to go at Drake, I’d be interested. He’s just going at Drake cause Drizzy is at the top of the rap game right now, and Common sure isn’t! But it could get good… Drake gotta REALLY reply now!! Good lookin out, Mel!! xoxo

Though, I’m generally in agreement with Mindbender and his view of the rap game, in this particular case, I unfortunately have to disagree with his position. As any Common fan is aware of, Lonnie has ALWAYS taken shots at heads on at least a couple songs per album. It’s always been his M.O. and the beefs just generally never pan out to further than a few little subliminal disses because most people don’t really want it with Com. It’s just the environment Com was bred in and what many of us originally loved about him (his ability to transition from socially aware to relationship centric to straight up battle rap) he’s always done it. The argument that Com isn’t at the top of his game and is only going after Drizzy cause he’s one of the top dudes in the game I truly believe is false. Yes, I understand where that argument is coming from, but this isn’t just a marketing ploy as some might believe. He doesn’t like this music. But on top of that A LOT of people don’t like his music. A LOT. A lot of our heroes, pioneers, so on and so forth have an extreme hate on for Drizzy’s brand of watered down pop and pseudo melodies. The only reason anyone is getting irate about this now is because Common’s actually getting attention for it because, though he’s not “at the top of the rap game right now” as Mindbender put it, he’s still completely relevant and capable of breathing fresh air into the lungs of the youth.

Keep this in mind. When Com pointed out the Bitch in Cube….he wasn’t at the top of the foodchain either. But CUBE was. And Com definitively tore stripes off the lapel of one of the greatest O.G.’s in the game. Now why weren’t people crying foul then? Com’s always made a point to voice the things he wasn’t pleased with, and as a Com fan, I’d expect nothing less. So I’d say, rather than looking at this as a negative, look at it as a positive, Com’s giving Drizzy the opportunity to rise to a level and battle one of the greats (whether you believe he still is or not), now it’s just on Drizzy to show and prove.
