Tona dropped this joint just in time for the ultimate party weekend in Toronto (a.k.a. Caribana!).  I listened to it at work and it immediately made me wish I was up in the clubs. I’m literally counting down the minutes until 5PM!  Featuring DJ Dames Nellas on the mic as the hype man is just another nice touch to an already dope track.  I’m ready to go innnnnn!!!!  Enjoy the track (and party safe this weekend!!)….Oh yeah – Look out for that SILVERSPRING CRESCENT LP in the Fall.

This will undoubtedly be one of the hot ticket items for this Fall! Producer extraordinaire, 9th Wonder and artist Stalley have been added to an already impressive list of  judges. If you’re an on-the-rise producer and want to make your mark, you still have time to register for this competition — deadline is August 15th. Not sure if you’re ready to compete? Some of the other events look like they’ll make pretty good networking opportunities.  See the details below!

Grammy award winning and nominated producers, T-Minus, Boi-1da, 9th Wonder and Maybach Music Group Recording Artist Stalley will be joining aspiring producers in Toronto, Canada for the nations official producer competition and retreat. BBM Producer Retreat is a three-day, ten-event series.

Grammy nominated and platinum-selling producer, T-Minus is taking time to show his love for the event that gave him his initial push as a producer. T-Minus was crowned champion at the 2005 installment of the competition. “It’s an honour to come back and be a part of what was a big influence on my career, says T-Minus. “It was a pivotal moment in my life; it really showed that I had the talent to make it in the industry.” Since his win at BBM, T-Minus has gone on to earn a Grammy nomination for his production work on Ludacris’ “How Low”, and has produced chart toppers like T.I.’s “Poppin’ Bottles”, Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life” featuring Drake and current smash hit by DJ Khaled “I’m On One” featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil’ Wayne.

Grammy award winning and platinum-selling producer Boi-1da, has competed in the event winning three times in previous years and took part as a judge in 2008 and 2010. He returns this year looking for the next top producer to win the 2011 crown. “I’m looking for creativity, transitions in the beats, and honestly just hard hitting beats” says Boi-1da. “Their beats have to move the crowd!” Boi-1da has garnered much awards and acclaim with chart topping hits and album credits such as Eminem’s album “Recovery”, Drake’s “Thank Me Now”, DJ Khaled’s “We The Best Forever” to name a few. Collectively selling platinum six-seven times over.

Grammy award winning producer 9th Wonder makes his first appearance to the competition this year. Very familiar with the grind producers have to endure to make it in the industry. 9th was tapped to produce on Jay-Z’s “Black Album”, three songs for the R&B Super group Destiny’s Child on the album “Destiny Fulfilled”, Mary J. Blige for “The Breakthrough”, Erykah Badu’s “Honey” and Ludacris’s “Do The Right Thang”, and will also be working with Drake on his sophomore album. 9th Wonder signs on as a special guest judge, panelist and keynote speaker at the Pro Audio Conference. The excitement doesn’t stop there! 9th Wonder will be screening the Canadian premiere of “The Wonder Year”, a documentary directed by Kenneth Price, which chronicles a year in the life of CEO, NAACP ambassador, Duke University professor, husband, father, son and Grammy award winning producer 9th Wonder.

Rounding out the list of judges is Maybach Music Group recording artist Stalley. “Producers and artists like the announced judges motivate aspiring producers to strive for success. Those same aspiring producers motivate me to continue putting my heart and soul into keeping BBM going.” Says Clifton Reddick, BBM/Sound Supremacy Entertainment Founder. “Turning on the radio and hearing Boi-1da & T-Minus or turning on the TV and watching music videos even awards shows featuring/acknowledging them is also something that makes me know the show must go on.”

Full details on each event will be made available via www.battleofthebeatmakers.com . This is the ultimate destination for any producer in Canada serious about showcasing their talent, networking and taking the next step in their musical career.

Registration for main event:
Applications are still being accepted until August 15th, 2011.
Producers of all ages can enter for a chance to compete.

Producers can make their way over to www.battleofthebeatmakers.com to register online or they can register in-person at various locations across the Great Toronto Area.

The lineup of 18 artists from Toronto, Calgary, Montreal and London includes 3 artists from the acclaimed Remix Project and child piano prodigy Catherine He, at age 7 the youngest artist ever to take to the Honey Jam stage.  Go to www.honeyjam.com and click on “2011 artists” to see more info on who made the cut.

Q-Tip holds the mic as Mindbender goes INNNNN on a full verse from Can I Kick It during the Toronto Stop of the Bounce 2K Tour

I gotta admit – I kinda chuckled when I saw the title of this one. I mean, really — Brokeback Gangsta?? But when I saw it was from one of my favorite people in the hip hop universe, Mindbender, I paid attention.  For those who don’t know, Mindbender is a staple and a true supporter of hip hop, especially music from Canada. He’s the one who can be found in the front row of every concert, rhyming word-for-word along with the performer – very much like myself, he’s ultimately a true fan of the music.

I often thought that hip hop was the final frontier when it comes to homophobia (of course, I was dead-wrong: I’m almost certain that dancehall wins the prize on that one). This song challenges fans of the genre, along with the artists and purists to realize that it’s 2011, get an open mind and accept people for who they are, not what they do behind closed doors.  Telling people to keep it all about the music may be easier said than done,  but if anyone can get people to change how they perceive things – it’s Mindbender.

Message from Mindbender:

In this age of revolutionary redefinition of sexuality and identity on an individual and international level, our world is witnessing breakthroughs like never before on the frontiers of freedom and self-expression, in every dimension of life. But tragically, at the same time, our world has certainly not rid itself of the evils of homophobia, sexual oppression, bigotry, racism and general hate for anyone who is considered “the other”, whether gay/lesbian/transgendered/transsexual/bi-sexual/other. Do these even matter? Haven’t we achieved equal humanity yet? And if not, we work, we pray, we hope, and we never stop trying until we all get there… together. And in the wake of Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford declining an appearance at the one million strong Gay Pride Parade, we must face the fact that not everyone is as open-minded and accepting of all lifestyles and all peoples as… artists like Bryan Van Dusen of the design house Ghetto Panda (‘…Is Mann E Face’, ‘Don’t Try This At Home’, ‘Enter the Scorpion’) and Mindbender Supreme (member of the Supreme Being Unit, solo albums: ‘Jupiter’ produced by Rich Kidd, ‘Beautiful Mutant’, featuring Eternia, 4th Pyramid, Chuggo, etc.), the creators of this unprecedented musical declaration for peace and love for all: ‘Brokeback Gangsta’.

With the vision of video director Jarek Obsadny (‘Dance of Light’, ‘Into the Labyrinth’, ‘Cali Alone’ and ‘If You Wanna’) , this creative and aesthetic tour de force will undoubtedly impact every single set of eyes and ears that sees and hears it, whether positively or negative. It is as inevitable as good things coming from these two long time friends, BVD and Mindbender, who met up at In Divine Style during the nostalgic days of the mid-2000’s when Toronto hip hop kept itself alive with unbreakable will. Sharing an affinity for powerful stage performances, beautiful things in life, and spiritual and sexual freedom, Bryan and Addi “Mindbender” Stewart eventually decided to make a statement about why, a decade after the turn of the millennium, when humanity is supposed to be the most advanced and civilized ever, young homosexual boys in high schools still commit suicide, young lesbian girls are still terrorized and ostracized from their social circles, and various people from all walks of life and love and sex are shut out of a peaceful place to be, either silently or violently. This cannot continue. Until sexual phobias, discrimination, racism, and sexual violence of every kind is a thing of the past, we must speak up, we must heal ourselves, we must simply be part of the solution, instead of being part of the problem, which hip hop certainly is, at times…

Between his group, Art of Fresh with Slakah the Beatchild, Toronto’s D.O. has  done two (count ’em, TWO!!!) tours in Asia, a tour in the US and one across Canada, AND he’s managed to team up with Classified and record a new track, She Likes You — did I mention he’s done all of this within the past year and a half?!?  Just reading his list of accomplishments makes me want to work even harder, but D.O. doesn’t stop Defying the Odds.  In addition to being a full-time performer, he’s also a motivational speaker at schools throughout Canada via his program,  http://dostaydriven.com/ – and over the past 18 months he’s done 150 school visits. I can say first-hand that he’s truly qualified for that one – he used to be my son’s teacher 🙂 If you don’t want to take my word for it, get it from legendary MC Chuck D of Public Enemy, who has said, “D.O. represents the new breed of MCs putting heat on the status quo of the rap game.”

Check out the new track, with Classified on the beat:

So if you know me at all, I’ve already clued you in to the fact that I’m a HUGE fan of Toronto-based  Saukrates.  He’s an all-around crazy-talented artist who has skills on the mic, can produce, plays instruments,  AND he’s Guyanese!! lol….  Some of his classic tracks can still bun down a party (just try dropping Still Caught Up or Hate Runs Deep in a jam, and watch what happens!).

Additionally he’s worked with some other music heavy hitters, including Redman, Method Man, Maestro, Nelly Furtado, k-os, and the list goes on.  Saukrates is behind some of the biggest chunes from over the last year or so (including the Soaring to Heaven remix alongside Rich Kidd), and if you’re a fan like me, I know you’ve been waiting for years for the full album to FINALLY drop.  Every now and then he delivers tidbits from the soon-to-be released album, Saukrates: Season One, but today I got slapped with not one, but TWO tracks from Sauks. Call it Christmas in July if you’ve been good….. ENJOY!!

Check the links for Drop It Down ft. Redman and
Na, Na, Na ft. O.B O’Brien, Adreena Mill (!), & Michelle Nyce.
Talk about a Good Friday!!

Shouts out to everyone who attended the Honey Jam 2011 Media Launch last night!! Attendees got a first look at the list of talented ladies who will be performing in the annual showcase on Thursday August 11th at The Mod Club (Toronto).  I’ve been a part of Honey Jam since the very first showcase waaaaaay back in 1995, and I’ve been a strong supporter ever since. I’ve only missed 1 show in 2001 because I had my daughter a few days before the show, but I was definitely there in spirit!  I’ve had the opportunity to see some of my favorite performers take to the stage over the years, including Jully Black, Tara Chase, Reema Major, Saidah Baba Talibah, Toya Alexis, and more.

This year promises to be on point once again, featuring some ladies that I LOVE (like Jenny Laws, SoJay and Kitana!!) and some new names including child prodigy, Catherine He, who I have a feeling is going to make me question my parenting skills *sigh*….

Anyway, here’s the 411 on Honey Jam – you can also check out www.HoneyJam.com for more info!! On top of that, I’ll be spinning alongside my homie Tasha Rozez, and you know we always dun de place!! LOL….
