R.I.P Gifted Universal Rhymes Unlimited (Guru)

April 28, 2010

So it’s been just over a week since Guru’s untimely passing, and to be honest I was a little surprised at how hard I took the news.

I had the awesome opportunity of meeting Guru and DJ Premier a few times over the years – in fact, Guru was one of my first big press conferences.  It was around the time the first Jazzmatazz dropped and I remember being nervous as all hell about getting the chance to speak with an artist that I had so much respect for.  By then, both Guru and Preemo were living legends, and joints like Just to Get a Rep, Take It Personal, B.Y.S and more were guaranteed to shut down any party with true headz. From the minute he walked in the room, he just exuded coolness – no ego or arrogance.

Regardless of how much influence Guru had on hip hop in North America, and around the globe, he was always mad cool and always respectful.  I got the chance to speak with him a few other times – the last time being in 2007 when he started working with Solar.

Despite the controversy surrounding his passing, and the now infamous “deathbed letter”, based on the few brief moments I got to speak with him, I can’t believe that Guru, who was peaceful and loving in life, would want to leave the earth with all that hate and negativity in his heart.  We’ll probably never know the truth behind that whole story, but what we can do is celebrate the legacy he left behind.

I did a little dedication to Guru on this past Monday’s edition of Droppin’ Dimez Radio, but it can’t hold a candle to the one DJ Premier did on his show last week.  Hearing Primo’s description of seeing Guru in the hospital shortly before he died is nothing short of heart-wrenching.  The first few tracks were curious choices — message to Solar, perhaps?? You be the judge…. Big ups to the folks behind www.DJPremierBlog.com for keeping fans up-to-date with all things Gangstarr.
