My sis L’oqenz never ceases to amaze, teach and transform.  Okayplayer has just featured a project she produced (under her production alias NON aka niteowlnaps), based on the Downtown81 Soundtrack starring Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The Basquiat inspired artwork attached is a 3.5 x 3.5ft painting created by a young, talented and brilliant artist named, Felipe Velasquez.  Peep the audio below and follow her on Twitter at @NiteOwlNaps :

It’s been a long time since I got to put it down in the club with one of my fav DJs (and all-around good people), DJ Channel Nine. On Saturday April 25th at The Parkdale Drink, he and DJ Tabs are making room for me in the DJ booth, and I for one can’t wait! This one is definitely for the grown and sexy. The club is consistently rammed with people wanting to have a good time, so with Spring officially in the air, it just may be the weekend to take the party to the streets. Come through!

Some New audio edibles from the duo of Junia-T and Lord Quest, known as ‘Chef’s Plate’. Junia-T has been on my list of fav Toronto MCs for a minute, and Lord Quest is just plain dope, so the two of them together is a recipe for goodness. Peep the official blurb down below, but make sure you take time to check out their Souncloud page, download and enjoy…

TORONTO – After a long hiatus, Chef’s Plate is finally back with another remix, “Poured Up”. Mix and mastered in Quest’s kitchen, the track fuses Rihanna’s “Pour It Up” with adlibs from Kendrick’s Swimming Pools. Stream/download the track above.

“It’s impossible to listen to this and not want to get up and dance. The energy is too infectious!!!” said LordQuest.

About Chef’s Plate

Toronto-based producers LordQuest and Junia-T have teamed up on the decks to form Chef’s Plate, an experimental project that has the hip-hop artists venturing into the realm of future bass. Jonathon “Junia-T” Lindo is an artist, producer and emcee from Mississauga, Ontario. Last winter he debuted his project Eye See You on OkayPlayer, which was also heavily tipped by DJBooth.comThe Source, and 2DopeBoyz to name a few. LordQuest is a Toronto-based artist and producer. In 2013 he released his first solo project as an emcee titled Still Shopping. The following year he gained recognition through his production placements on Talib Kweli’s Gravitas and ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron. Currently he’s in the studio working on his EP.

Young Ashley dropped this during Black History Month, but lyrics and Knowledge of Self should be celebrated every day of the year.  I’m looking forward to doing some more work with Ashley in the very near future. Keep your ears open and your eyes wide…. Peep the official blurb on the video below:

A young Toronto female MC uses a musical platform to spread knowledge about her culture, identity & roots. In this video she captures many African influential icons who paved the way in History. While staying true to artistry, Ashley Jenelle is known for her raw delivery yet thought-provoking truth in her rhymes.

Toronto’s Frankie Payne is back with a new video and a new EP, entitled Children of the Speaker. Revolutionary, thought-provoking, lyrical and always on point, the EP is definitely worth checking out, which features previously unreleased work. Need more good news? Word is that Freedom Writers are back in the lab.

If you’re looking for an up and coming R&B artist to watch from Toronto, keep your eyes on Nyce Brown.  After releasing the remix to SZA’s “Babylon” a few months ago, Brown has captured the attention of those craving a soulful sound. With a 6-track EP that combines smooth vocals with sultry baselines, featuring production from Kyle Justice, Devid Neale and AndreOnBeat, Brown is getting ready to make his mark in Toronto and beyond.  With songs like the sensual “Screamin'” and “Lay It Down” to the romantic “Need Your Love” and “Prince of Hearts,” Nyce Brown paints a picture etched in love and the essence of true R&B. These aren’t necessarily songs for the club, but can definitely be added to the mix for that one-on-one after party.

I’m admittedly on the late bus with this one, but still love the song so I wanted to post it. John River is part of Toronto’s Generation Next as far as MC’s go, and he clearly LOVES what he does. He’s definitely hungry, and one to watch. The video was released last month and is getting steady support.  Peep the video:

Also for the DJs – here’s the DJ Pack for the song. Special salute to ANDRE 905 for sharing the links. Sharing is caring…
